No further details were available as of press time, which leaves members of the general public wondering about the safety of their children.
On Friday June 11 at approximately 8:30 a.m., Yorkton Municipal RCMP received a call of an attempted abduction of a child in a residential area located on the southwest side of the city.
A 10-year-old female was walking alone to a friends residence before school when an unknown male offender got out of his vehicle and came towards the girl. He attempted to grab her arm however the girl was able to evade the offender's grasp and run to safety. The last time the girl saw the offender, he was walking away in the other direction.
Yorkton Police Dog Service was called into assist. The track was initiated by the police service dog and ended a short distance away leading police to believe the offender left the area in a vehicle. The direction of travel is unknown at this time. Police have canvassed the surrounding neighborhood, schools, playgrounds as well as local hotels in an effort to locate the vehicle with negative results.
The offender is described as Caucasian, approximately 5'9" tall, with a slender build. He is in his 20's. He was wearing a red shirt with vertical stripes, baggy blue jeans, skateboard runners and a ball cap. He has shaggy brown hair that stuck out from his hat on all sides. The hair hangs over his eyes. He also has a jagged cut on his right arm, about the length of a pinky finger that is red in color and appears to be healing.
The vehicle is described as a two door, dark blue boxy style car, possibly a hatchback. There is a scratch leading to a dent on the passenger side. The licence plate, is white in color with blue letters.
Local school division offices and area schools have been notified of the occurrence and are working to assist RCMP in the investigation.
All RCMP Detachments and Municipal Police Forces have been notified of the occurrence. Victim Services has been called into assist with the young girl and her family. The young girl was not injured in the incident. At this time, investigation has revealed this to be an isolated incident in the City of Yorkton, and the investigation is continuing. The public is urged to contact the Yorkton Municipal RCMP Detachment with any information relating to this incident.
