Children helping children a world away

In Yorkton, it's easy for students to get an education, but in countries like Sierra Leone it's much more difficult. Grade 8 students at Yorkdale School are putting forth the effort to create change and are raising money to help build a school in the country.

One Yorkdale class is working with Free the Children, and the goal is to raise $2,500 for the project, which is half of the money needed. Free the Children will match the donations made by the school.

Grade 8 student Tessa Datema says the project is something that the class wanted to get involved in. "We decided that would be something that would be good for everybody," she comments.

The first fundraiser for students will be conducted while trick or treating in the community. Students will be carrying boxes for people to put a donation in. Each box will be marked to show the student is from Yorkdale. Datema says this is the first of many planned fundraising events that will be held throughout the year. She also says students will go month by month, and decide together what they're going to do next to raise the money. So far the students have raised $200, and the project is expected to last the year.

Datema notes that an education is something kids in Canada can take for granted, but kids in other countries are not always fortunate enough to receive.

"It feels good because they don't have much, and it's really nice to give them something they deserve," she concludes.
