City land parcel to go on the selling block

If all goes at planned Yorkton's west end will see new development and an added anchor to the city.

If all goes at planned Yorkton's west end will see new development and an added anchor to the city.

At Monday evening's regular meeting of City Council it was decided to see a parcel of land just west of the Gallagher Centre where the water treatment facility now sits.

With an appraisal value of approximately $708,000 councillors agreed it would be in the cities best interest to sell the property for future development.

Currently there are two business parties which have expressed an interest in the site.

"It presently contains Water Treatment Plant No. 2," said city planner Gord Shaw to council, "But this facility is scheduled to be decommissioned once the new plant on Queen Street is operational. The subject property is located at the gateway to Yorkton from Highways 10 and 52 and represents a prime location for motorists heading into or from the city."

With the new Painted Hand Casino already in place at the west end, council believes new development will further enhance that side of Yorkton and act as a draw.

It's anticipated Yorkton's newest water treatment facility will be fully tested and operational by mid to late September, paving the way for the old site to be decommissioned.

At Monday's meeting it was decided to put out a request for proposals (RFP) for the property "to ensure that both parties (which have expressed and interest in the location) have the opportunity to provide a development proposal that is in the best interest of the city. The RFP will be advertised in the event that other parties may be interested."
