Cleanup in the City of Yorkton after the Canada Day flood has been going for over a month, as people steadily dismantle and discard damaged material from their basement.

When a home is flooded, it is important to discard all of the damaged goods, mostly for health reasons. Water or sewer damaged goods can pose a health risk to people in the home. For example, mold and other contaminants could cause breathing difficulties.

In order to assist people in their cleanup and repair efforts, the city will be maintaining community dumpsters throughout Yorkton to serve people as they clean their homes.

Dumpsters will be maintained at Public Works on York Road and the Water Tower on Park Street. A new dumpster has also been opened, at the old Crown Mart location on Assiniboia Ave. and South Front Street.

Dumpsters at St. Paul's School and M.C. Knoll School have both been closed.

Though many homes still have large piles of debris outside their door, Darren Spelay, Recreation Services Manager, says that the city is no longer handling curbside pickup. However, he notes that some people may have a contractor who will be disposing of the material on their front lawn, and it is their responsibility to plan for how their debris will be handled.

If people need to use the city landfill, it will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Monday to Saturday. People who use the landfill need to keep their receipts and submit them to their insurance company or the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP). The City of Yorkton cannot guarantee that the expense will be covered by the insurance company or PDAP however, and contacting them directly is the only way to know for sure.
