What would you like the City of Yorkton be like in ten years? An upcoming strategic planning conference will help provide direction for the city, with citizens providing the input needed to move the city into the future. Yorkton 2020, a Community Strategic Plan Conference will be held on October 28-30.
The city is seeking 40-50 community members from all walks of life to help plan this future. The city will be contacting interests groups throughout the city, and also encourages everyone to express their interest in the planning session.
"It's a way for us to hear from the community, and make better decisions, based on what the community desires," says Mayor James Wilson.
Wilson emphasizes that a strategic plan made by the citizens of the city is vital for giving the current and future councils direction on what people want to see and where the city should go.
Conference participants will be selected to give a wide cross section of the community, and ensure that representation is given to the many groups in the city.
Two information meetings will be held before the conference itself, Thursday, September 30 at 12:00-1:00 p.m. and Monday, October 4 from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. There will also be a preconference briefing for all participants on October 20 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. All meetings will take place in the Gallagher Centre.
The conference itself will take place on October 28 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on October 29 and 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The criteria for selection is that participants must be committed to attend the entire two and a half day conference, they must pay City of Yorkton taxes and be a Saskatchewan resident, and they must be willing to be an actively participant in the conference.
The conference is budgeted at $12,000, though Wilson emphasizes that plans of this nature often cost $30,000 or more, and the value of a strategic plan for the city is worth the expense.
