Yorkton Minor Hockey hosted its annual Novice Tier 2 tournament over the recent weekend.
Event coordinator Sherri Ferris says the event featured 16 teams from Manitoba and Saskatchewan including five novice teams from Yorkton, the Yorkton Clean Spot Terriers, Yorkton Carlet's Farm Terriers, Yorkton Farrell Agencies Terriers, Yorkton Frame Tech Terriers and the Yorkton Thorsness Terriers. Novices are seven and eight year-old hockey players, she notes. Ferris says the games were very close, evenly matched games. She says parent and fan support for the annual tournament was excellent. "There's been a full house for games at both the Farrell Agencies Arena and at the Kinsmen Arena," Ferris suggests.
She thanks the tournament sponsors including the title sponsor McDonald's as well as the tournament committee for their work at putting the event together.
Tournament champions, the Yorkton Novice Clean Spot Terriers, won the A-side title over runners-up Yorkton Frame Tech Terriers by a score of 7-3.
A shootout decided the B-side winner as the Nipawin Hawks claimed the B-side title by a score of 6-5 over the runners-up Melfort Mustangs.
The Langenburg Warriors won the C-side 7-5 over runners-up Russell Rams.
The D-side went to the Yorkton Thorsness Terriers who downed the runners-up Yorkton Carlet's Farm Terriers 10-0.
Clean Spot Terriers coach Trevor Herzog says it was an awesome weekend for the young players. "We are very proud of our kids. They all skated extremely hard," he states. Coaches told the players win or lose as long as they did their best, they would be winners. The team won the A final with that attitude, Herzog declares. "All of our kids skated hard from the very first whistle right to the buzzer at the end of the game," Herzog says.
The Clean Spot Terriers are doing very well in league play, Herzog notes. Entering the league playoffs, the team has lost only one of its five games so far, he reports. "If our kids keep skating the way they are we'll do well through the rest of the playoffs, I think," he closes.
