Yorkton Springers Gymnastics Club athletes recently competed at the Gymnastic Adventure competition in Regina. Springers Provincial level 1,2 and 3 coach George Baranyai says his competitive girls have had their best performance ever at this competition. His 10 competitive Provincial levels 1,2 and 3 girls claimed 35 medals in Regina. "No club in the province has won that many medals in any competition," Baranyai claims.
This year the Yorkton Springers have modified their coaching structure. Baranyai is no longer head coach. The coaching has been divided among several people. Baranyai coaches 10 provincial level gymnasts. Coach Todd Appel works with five level 1 girls. There are about 15 GymCat Advanced girls coached by Jerry Lutz.
The Yorkton Springers started their competitive program in the second week of August, training and preparing for competition through the fall. From January until June of this year the group will train and compete until the end of June, Baranyai reports.
Lutz says the recent competition in Regina was good. There were 21 girls competing in each age group, he reports. The age groups included nine years and under as well as the 10 years and over. The GymCats are between the competitive and recreational levels. "They're learning competitive skills, but not three days a week," Lutz explains. GymCat competition awards standards medals rather than individual medals based on points, Lutz notes. Instead their performances are ranked on points. The Yorkton Springers gymnasts claimed two gold, two silver and two gold medals, Lutz adds.
