The (Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS) recently hosted its annual Big Buck Night for students and staff. "We had 16 participants take part this year," says YRHS teacher Darren Wandy.
The school started the event after teachers Darren Wandy and Rob Sharpe saw a need to showcase the successes of their students who enjoyed hunting. "This is an awesome event for our students. The kids who take part in the Big Buck Night may not take part in other school events," says Sharpe. However, they are interested in hunting so the event recognizes them for it. It's a way for these students to be part of the YRHS Family of Raiders, says Sharpe.
The students pay a small entry fee and the money collected is put back into prizes. Everyone who signs up and pays the fee receives a prize even if they do not harvest a deer.
Students are encouraged to practice good sportsmanship when selecting a deer to harvest. Students have been that to select mature deer when hunting. If they cannot find a mature deer to harvest, they still get a prize for taking part. "It's sort of a win-win situation" says Wandy.
Local businesses were also approached and were very generous with prizes. Donor included Bird Dog Archery, Home Hardware and Eugene Wlock of the Diamond W Ranch.
The overall and male winner of the YRHS Big Buck Night was Carson Cook with a score of 138 5/8. The female winner and second overall was Tara Lazurko with a score of 128 4/8.
Event organizers expressed special appreciation to Eugene Pawliw of the YRHS for usage of a facility to score the heads and to Ken Somo-gyi of the Melville Fish and Game League for scoring the heads.
