Yorkton and area residents once again turned out in full force for a cause that is near and dear to the hearts of many. While the money was still coming in as of press time, it was calculated that a whopping $42,719.67 had been raised for cancer research through the Canadian Cancer Society as a result of the 14th annual Brayden Ottenbreit Close Cuts for Cancer event held Saturday in Yorkton.
Fifty-seven participants turned out for the event, losing their locks for a great cause. A total of $2,463.28 was also raised for local cancer initiatives, of which $1,000 was donated to The Health Foundation for the new hospital conceptual plan. The remainder of the funding went towards one night stays at the Regina Cancer Patient Lodge for local cancer patients and their attendants.
On the same day, 78 cheek swabs were done for the "5 Minutes for the Fight" OneMatch Stem Cell & Bone Marrow Cheek Swab Event that also took place in partnership with the Boechlers. In February of 2010 local teen Luke Boechler was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and it is only due to a Bone Marrow Stem Cell Transplant that he is with us today.
