Isn't the whole idea behind having an alcoholic beverage, or two, or three, or whatever the case may be, to enjoy the intoxicating feeling it provides? To relax, loosen up and maybe ease a little tension?
Not that I'm trying to be an advocate of alcohol (to each his own), it's just that sometimes I wonder the thought process that goes behind certain actions.
Earlier this week it was announced there is a team of Australian scientists who are working on the world's next profound discovery - the "stay sober pill" of course. What?! The idea behind the pill is that a person can drink as much alcohol as they like, and not experience the feeling of intoxication. Drink away and there will be no more embarrassing texts to the ex, no going home with who you shouldn't and no acting up at the staff Christmas party. Woohoo!
So why not just drink pop? You could have the same effect without the need for a drug...
According to the head researcher on the topic, the pill will also come in handy when it comes to reducing accidents as a result of drinking and driving after all, if your brain isn't impaired by the alcohol, then your motor skills remain unaffected. The whole concept leads some to wonder if such a drug will just give users "a license to overindulge."
I suppose it could, but again I have to ask, why would you want to? Why would you want the expense of drinking (it's not cheap these days), on top of the negative affects it can have on your health (when you overindulge... not to mention the next day) if you're not reaping any of the benefits? It just makes no sense, not to me anyway.
The feeling of "drunkenness" experts say, is the body's way of reacting to the alcohol it's absorbing, meaning it has an actual purpose.
Wouldn't taking something to suppress this be a bad idea?
If you want to avoid the consequences/effects of drinking alcohol then quite simply DON'T drink, or at least be responsible about it. Line up a designated driver, leave the cell phone at home (if you're prone to drunk texting) and have a friend keep you in line when it comes to other bad behaviors. Drugs and alcohol are never a good mix at the best of times so why should this be any different?
Now... maybe if a "sober up/no hangover guarantee" pill to take at the night's end was invented... That's another story. ;-)
