The Saskatchewan Fiddle Championships were held at the 15th Annual John Arcan Fiddle Fest from August 9-12 and an area girl took home a top honor.
Shelby Gibson of Willowbrook won the 2012 Saskatchewan Novice Fiddle Championship award, defending her 2011 title. Shelby also won first in the John Arcand Class, as well as second in the Novice 1 category.
Shelby was accompanied by her sister Taylor on guitar and Trent Bruner of Canwood on piano.
For the Saskatchewan Championship Class and the Novice 1 competition she played "Memories of Eva" Waltz, Swallowtail Jig and Pelican's Reel.
To compete in the John Arcand Class, competitors must play a waltz and any other tune composed by John Arcand. Shelby played the "Dionna/Megan Waltz" and "Big Bear."
Shelby and Taylor have studied for the past six years at Prairieland Music Studios - Craig Patzer of Yorkton as their fiddle and guitar teacher. They also give credit to their grandpa, Jack Rioch of Invermay and the Tuffnell Fiddle Jammers of Tuffnell, Saskatchewan for all the extra hours of stage time and tutelage.
