It's the fund that keeps on giving. The Community Initiatives Fund (CIF) has announced 115 Saskatchewan non-profit and volunteer organizations will receive more than $2.2 million in grants to help deliver community projects. The $2.2 million includes $1,939,515 for 93 capital projects and $273,305 for 22 community milestones and events.
Announced in May this year, CIF's Community Vitality Program is responding to community priorities by helping volunteer and non-profit organizations deliver community projects for Saskatchewan residents.
"Response to the first run of this new program was overwhelming," Tracey Mann, CIF Executive Director says. "We received proposals from broad and diverse Saskatchewan communities, large and small, from the far North to our Southern border. It's gratifying to respond and help build on the assets of so many communities."
The Community Vitality Program has two components: Small Capital and Community Pride Projects and Events. Small capital projects may involve upgrading rinks and community halls, even improving accessibility for residents. Projects that bolster community pride involve special events projects such as community anniversaries and volunteer recognition.
"It is very important to support our volunteer and non-profit organizations." Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Bill Hutchinson adds. "Their members work hard to ensure community-based programs continue to provide recreation and cultural opportunities. This work contributes to the quality of life we all enjoy."
The CIF is a Special Purpose Fund created through The Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation Act and governed by a volunteer Board appointed through the Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport. The CIF offers grant programs for community-led projects that benefit children, youth and families in Saskatchewan.
The next application deadline for the Community Vitality Program is April 1, 2011.
