Friday evening, the Yorkton Habitat for Humanity Society held its third annual Funspiel at the Yorkton Curling Club.
Event organizer Karen Renton says the purpose of the Funspiel was to raise money for the Habitat House to be constructed in Yorkton this spring.
The event went over very well with 16 teams taking to the ice at 7:30 p.m., running until about 11:30 p.m., reports Renton. The theme this year, Winter Wonderland attracted several teams in costume. There were two teams dressed as bunnies, a team dressed as Elmer Fudd and his bunnies, the snow angels and the contact curlers, the Asham team.
Renton estimates about $7,000 was raised by the Funspiel with over $4,800 in pledges and the rest raised by the event entry fee.
The top fundraisers was the YTC team of Jackie Smuk, Kendra Sedley, April Brazeau and Terri-Ann Lepowick who raised $804.
Yorkton Habitat president Laurie Renton reports that the second Habitat house to be started this spring will go to a family of seven, the Nesbitt-Pelletier family with five children and mom and dad. It will be located on the site of the old Boy Scouts hall on Betts Avenue, not far from the first Habitat House.
"It's pretty exciting," says Renton who says Habitat Yorkton would like to start digging the basement as soon as the snow melts and the ground thaws.
