The third annual George Reed Golf Tournament for Special Olympics Saskatchewan will be held on Monday, June 25 at the Wascana Golf and Country Club.
In just two years, the tournament has grown to become one of the most popular and enjoyable charity tournaments in Saskatchewan.
The tournament, which has played to full fields both years, raised $20,000 the first year and $70,000 last year.
Played on Regina's premiere golf course, the tournament offers players the opportunity to enjoy a pre-tournament barbecue and a round of relaxing golf on the pristine Wascana layout.
The day ends with a superb supper featuring only the finest choices of food prepared by the Wascana's chef and staff that will satisfy any appetite.
Golfers get to mix with some of Saskatchewan's greatest cultural and sports figures as well as Special Olympic athletes.
The entry free, which includes the barbecue lunch, a round of golf and the dinner, is being kept at $250 per golfer. The tournament is open to both men and women.
Proceeds from the tournament go towards supporting and building the many programs available for the 2,000 Special Olympic athletes throughout Saskatchewan.
"It never ceases to amaze me how Saskatchewan people support great charities like this one," says Rider legend George Reed, who has been involved with Special Olympics Saskatchewan since his playing days. "I can honestly say I am overwhelmed by how quickly this tournament has grown. It's just a great day."
Canadian curling champion Amber Holland has played in the first two tournaments and will be back for the third one. "It really is one of the best tournaments I play in every year," she said. "It is so much fun, and these Special Olympics athletes are so inspiring when you see what they have accomplished in their lives through Special Olympics."
Tournament Director Bob Hughes says, "We have grown because of the great support of golfers and sponsors. It is amazing, really, when you considered we started from ground zero in 2010. I would not wait too long to enter a team or help us by taking a sponsorship package. I can honestly say the tournament is the most relaxing and inspiring I have ever seen. We have had people crying at our banquet listening to Special Olympic athletes get up and tell their stories and talk about how Special Olympics has helped them."
