Well known local curler Gerry Adam, who recently won the Yorkton Curling Club (YCC) Men's Cash Bonspiel, has changed direction in the sport. A member of the Pat Simmons foursome for the past four years, Adam retired from the team to ease up a little and to be home with his family a little more.
"It's been a different year. I'm not curling nearly as much as I have in the last four years," he reports.
"I'm really been enjoying it, kind of taking it easy and having fun" Adam adds.
He's taken the position of skip with a rink of former teammates, including Gerald Shymko, and Brian Derbowka, adding former Mel-ville sensation, Jason Tucker. "I've got the old guard back together so it's been really good," he says.
The Yorkton LDM Spiel is the team's first major event other than some games in the YCC super league. The Adam foursome emerged as winners in an extra end final against the young Hartung rink. "They're a great team. They're going to have a really good shot at the Saskatchewan junior championship this year," Adam predicts.
In addition to curling, Adam is currently coaching the Michelle Englot team out of Regina which he sees as a very competitive foursome. As coach he's been travelling with the team to bonspiels in Saskatchewan and Alberta. "I enjoy that. That's going to be the next phase in my curling career is a bit more coaching," he announces.
He feels it was time for a different phase in his curling career which caused him to leave the very competitive curling. "I just thought it was time to stay at home with the family and do some local curling for a change and I'm really enjoying it actually," Adam closes.
