It's been some time coming. The road to the top wasn't smooth nor easy to ride. There were crashes, broken bones and broken dreams, but Denaye Giroux Yorkton's premier female motocross racer finally carries the Number 1 plate for Western Canada after winning the title in Naniamo and Calgary this year.
Giroux was very comfortable with the track at Naniamo which was packed hard similar to Yorkton's track. Calgary was a big mud race so the big challenge was just to stay upright and finish the race. She rode both tracks well enough to claim the western women's title.
Giroux had to overcome a couple of challengers on the way to her win, including Sidney Dixon and Mitzi Hackett. "Lots of girls have been working very hard over the winter. The series is growing and everybody's getting faster. It's not just a one man show out there. There's competition," she states.
Giroux was in Yorkton competing in the Yorkton Motorcycle club's annual race meet.
"It feels awesome. I've been going at this for six years now. It's about time I got the win," Giroux says.
Following the western Canadian races, Giroux slipped south of the border to take in a couple of WMA races in the Colorado and Melville, Minnesota where she finished 17th which was her best finish in the U.S.
She will leave for Walton, Ontario in a couple of weeks to compete in the Canadian Amateur Nationals August 12-15 where she will battle for the Canadian national title.
She enjoys riding with the Schraders' Yamalube Team. Team riding has provided a lot of new equipment as well as the assistance of sponsors. "For the nationals we actually have a big semi rig that we pit out of. It just makes it a lot more professional," Giroux reports.
Currently, other than Yorkton and a few other provincial races, Giroux is withdrawing from the provincial race scene to focus on the national series. "There are more girls riding the provincial series that are in it to win it, so I'll let them handle that," she closes.
