What a summer! Rain, rain and more rain! Good Spirit Acres homes were spared, although the golf course did have a bit more water than they would have liked. BUT we have never had such green fairways! Thanks to Arnie and the boys for your continuing loyalty and hard work!
For Good Spirit Acres all the rain was a blessing in disguise. One evening in early July, an alert resident noticed smoke coming from the building adjacent to the skating rink which is in Spilchen Meadows. She notified staff at the Good Spirit Market, who called 911 for help.
Local residents with hoses from their homes started pouring water on the buildings adjacent to the fire, namely the camp kitchen, and shed. Other volunteers, some who were not residents, but noticed the problem, came to help. If not for the Good Spirit Provincial Park Fire Protection equipment, which was a trailer with a tank and hose, as well as the man-power, who got the water from the ditch next to Spilchen Meadows, we, at Good Spirit Acres could have seen a lot more devastation to our community.
We have lost a snowblower, hockey nets, other equipment, namely our unique "Zamboni," as well as damage to the siding on the shed and camp kitchen. The Springside Volunteer Fire Dept. also attended the fire, but it was the quick action of the locals and alert volunteers that really saved the day. We are now waiting on insurance, so that we can replace the shed and be ready for winter, and have ice on our rink for all the children and adults alike!
