It's a gift that will keep on giving back for years to come as well as, an opportunity of a lifetime for those who are fortunate enough to benefit from the initiative.
Last week another Yorkton family became the proud owners of their very own home thanks to the generosity and dedication of the local Habitat for Humanity organization.
Teaming up with local volunteers, donors and with the help of the provincial government a Habitat has made a dream come true for a family in need.
The Province, through the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, provided $50,000 in funding to help build the home located at 23 Dunlop Street West. The project also received approximately $15,000 from Mosaic Potash Corporation, with an additional $25,000 being raised through a raffle for a car donated by Yorkton Hyundai.
"The need for affordable housing is greater than ever and support from the community is key to providing low-income, hard-working families with the opportunity for home ownership. This is the fourth home completed in Yorkton and it couldn't have been done without the support of our partners," Habitat for Humanity COO Rob Gartner comments. "The tremendous support we receive from the provincial government through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, private companies, and individuals allows us to continue helping families break the cycle of poverty through home ownership."
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable home ownership. Each family selected by Habitat for Humanity will contribute 500 volunteer hours of "sweat equity" toward the building of their home or other Habitat homes.
It goes to show, many hands can make light work, and that with determination, cooperation and the spirit of giving, anything can be achieved. Well done to all who were - and continue to be - involved.
