The Health Foundation's 4th Annual Charity Road Race was a huge success, raising a record $41,500 for the purchase of local operating room equipment.
With 224 registered participants - the highest number ever in the history of the race - Ross Fisher, Executive Director of The Health Foundation says he couldn't be more pleased with the results.
"We are really pleased with how the Charity Road Race continues to grow and become a truly regional event.
"This year was a tremendous year with more runners and walkers than ever, the participants raised more pledges than ever before and sponsorship from the business community was outstanding."
The Yorkton Co-op was the Presenting Sponsor for the 4th year in a row and this year they were joined by Swim Bike Run Sportstore, the new Associate Sponsor.
Together they cover all the costs of the race so that 100 per cent of all the pledges raised by race participants and all other cash sponsorships made by the business community can be used to buy medical equipment says Fisher.
This was the first year for a corporate relay to be incorporated as part of the Road Race and the relay was a great addition adds Fisher. The relay was a 10 km race with each member of the team running a 2.5 km leg.
"This was a great start for the relay event, and we think it will only grow in the future. We intend to keep the relay and hope it will grow and we can see some friendly rivalries develop over time.
The Louck's Pharmacy team won the race with a time of 49:48. The team consisted of Jenna Arnelien, Katherine Diduck, Brad Surjik, and Bailee Tendler.
The Crestvue Ambulance team consisting of Courtney Aitken, Kim Kyle-Zwirsky, Colin Niebergall and Dallas Schwartz raised the most money, with pledges of $1,240.
"This year many people came out in support of the runners and walkers.
There were a lot more people along the route watching the race and on the grounds of the high school. We have been trying to grow this as a fun family event to encourage participation," and the longer we have the run the more we see that happening.
"This year also saw a wide range of participants with children five years old to runners in their 70's as well as parents pushing babies in strollers. There were many people just trying to finish their run, and of course, there were the competitive runners," says Fisher.
This year the top fundraiser was Jackelyn Kentel of Langenburg, who raised $2,114.50 and won the first prize of a Toshiba 32" flat screen high definition TV, sponsored by Audio Warehouse.
The Top 10 Fundraisers were: Jackelyn Kentel, of Langenburg, $2,114 Grace Malinowski, of Yorkton, $1,205 Bernadette Kormos, of Yorkton, $1,150 Joanne Geysen, of Yorkton, $1,040 Breanne Babichuk, of Invermay, $811 Jennifer Marchand, of Yorkton, $760 Kristy Cmoc, of Regina $707 Judy Charney of Yorkton $560 Ross Fisher, of Yorkton $545 Ken Starger, of Yorkton, $512.
"This year the participants in the Charity Road Race collected over $26,000 in pledges, and it was great to see so many participants collecting pledges."
When we combine that with the generous sponsorships from the business community, the Charity Road Race will see net revenue of just over $39,000.
"We are very fortunate to have a great organizing committee working on this race, they devoted a lot of time to making sure that all the details of the day were thought of."
Committee members were: Chair, Deanna Black; Bernie Wlock; Faye Andrusiak; Leslie Bazin, Andrew Rae, Brad Ouart, Karlie Holtkamp and Ross Fisher.
"We really have to thank our sponsors for their tremendous support," adds Deanna Black, Chair of the Charity Road Race. Without sponsorship from the business community this race could not happen."
