While I get the thought process behind the decision, for the life of me I don't see the logic in it.
Last week a shipment of puppies made its way to Regina from Ontario - not your typical cuddly batch of pet store pooches - but cast offs that were destined for death if they didn't leave Ontario.
In 2005 a ban on pit bull dogs was introduced in Ontario and since that time any found in the province that weren't there previous to the ban, either have to be put down or shipped out.
Why? Because according to "the experts" pit bulls have a higher tendency than other dogs to be aggressive. The ban came into effect after a number of vicious attacks occurred involving this type of breed. If a dog viciously attacks and I don't care what the breed - especially unprovoked - well then yes, I whole-heartedly agree something needs to be done, but how can you judge an entire breed line based on a select few? If you ask me, any dog can be mean; any dog can be gentle. Upbringing and socialization factor in far more than type of dog.
As a child I was bitten twice by dogs - once by a German Shepherd (which as a result, to this day I'm a tad leery of), and the other time by a cute, fluffy small dog that most people wouldn't think could have a mean bone in its body. It likely didn't, but startled by a group of young children, it reacted. Today while I love dogs and I have one of my own, I don't fully trust ANY that I don't know, small, large or otherwise. It's really no different than using people sense. Just because a person looks a certain way does not mean you can automatically trust, mistrust, or stereotype them. There's just no logic in that.
I was reading comments online on the topic and simply put, the following one kind of sums it all up for me.
"Gee if only we can ban criminals the same way, what a wonderful world this would be. Just because they end up in jail they should all be put down. Sounds stupid doesn't it, same as banning all pit bulls. Same mentality. All should be decided upon as an individuality, not breed."
It's easy to generalize and/or to pass off our problems. It takes far more effort to get to the root of the situation and to find real answers. In this instance it's people that are the problem. Until that logic sinks in should we start banning every hazard in society?
