A new promoter in Yorkton is making waves in the music scene in the city. Fresh off of a successful first show with Karl Wolf, Indestructible Entertainment has announced some major concert news in Yorkton, and has a mission to promote and encourage the music scene in the area.
Indestructible has made a flurry of announcements of upcoming shows. The Indestructible Entertainment Booster Juice Concert Series will feature Mean Tangerine on September 8, followed by Canadian hip hop group Swollen Members on September 27, both at The Spot. October begins with We Came as Romans on October 3 at the Spot as well. Jason Blaine comes to town with last band standing winner Steve Gibson on October 7 at Holly's, and the month ends with Randy and Lahey from the Trailer Park boys on October 21 at The Spot.
The biggest announcement is a solo performance by Scott Stapp, lead singer of Creed. The million dollar selling artist is performing a rare acoustic show for 300. The show, which takes place at Holly's on October 18, will be the only concert stop in Saskatchewan for Stapp.
"No idea how we pulled that one off, but we did. It's definitely a household name, he's sold over 40 million albums," says Skilly, president of Indestructible Entertainment.
Skilly began promoting in Chatham, Ontario, a similarly small market. He hopes to grow the music scene in Yorkton in the same way, by attracting bigger acts than people in the area are used to.
"I feel that this is something that has been lacking in Yorkton... People have been wanting this, they don't want to travel to Regina, Saskatoon or Brandon to see some of their favorite acts," Skilly says.
One of the goals is to engage the music scene in the area, and bring together more all ages shows to give youth in the city more opportunities to get out. While Indestructible will still have shows for an adult crowd, Skilly says, he intends to give a wide variety of music to see what the city wants to see.
"I think I've hit every type of genre of music, right on to hip hop, the country, the rock, the rap, even the comedy with the Trailer Park Boys. I want to throw everything at the city at once and see what's supported, and what the need is in the city," Skilly says.
One of the hopes is to start encouraging more local bands to start up and start playing in the city.
"There's not a lot of local artists, they don't really have the motivation to start a band because there's nowhere for them to play. So that's definitely something which is on the top of my list to change, and get the young musicians going. Letting them know there's something here for them," Skilly says.
With larger acts coming to the city, Skilly has observed that some people are surprised the shows are actually happening.
He notes that for the Karl Wolf show, he was asked if it was actually going to be the real artist, something he wasn't expecting to hear.
There will be a pre-sale for tickets to Scott Stapp on September 2 at Booster Juice. Tickets are $50.
