One of the oldest Yorkton Old Grinders still actively playing this season, Gordon Halyk, is considering hanging up his skates after the final game last Wednesday. Halyk, who started playing hockey as a five year old in 1939 will be 78 years old in August. He grew up playing on the outdoor rink across the alley from where he grew up in Fenwood. He played kid hockey and junior hockey. He was with the Fenwood Flyers, Kamsack, and the Yorkton Old Relics. He has played from Yorkton to Victoria, B.C., he recalls. Halyk says he still enjoys the game. "It's dragging the (equipment) bag out of the basement that's the hard part," he quips. Teammates are urging him to stay on for another year. Fletch (Gary Fletcher) quit when he was 78. Teammates are urging him to play another year to surpass Fletcher's record. "I'll have the summer to think about it," Halyk closes.
