The province's innovative and globally competitive manufacturing sector and the businesses comprising it are the focus of Saskatchewan Manufacturing Week, held November 26-30.
In 2011, the value of Saskatchewan's manufacturing shipments was $12.6 billion. Almost half of the province's manufacturing sector is based outside of Regina and Saskatoon. As of December 31, 2011, Saskatchewan had 1,063 manufacturing establishments across the province. Small businesses made up 88.1 per cent of these establishments.
"Our manufacturers are ambassadors of the Saskatchewan brand," Economy Minister Bill Boyd comments. "Farming, industrial and commercial operators around the world increasingly know the word 'Saskatchewan' when they see it, and actively look for it. It represents quality they know and trust. This week is an opportunity to acknowledge the people and business responsible for this global recognition and the contributions it has meant to this province."
According to the latest figures from Statistics Canada, the value of Saskatchewan's manufacturing shipments set a new record for the month of September, posting the highest percentage increase in the nation on a year-over-year basis, up by 7.7 per cent. Nationally, figures were up only 1.8 per cent. "This industry is a significant driver of our economy, both in terms of gross domestic product and employment," Boyd concludes.
