If you see mustaches on those who don't normally sport them this month - there's a good reason why. It's MOVEMBER!
Movember - the month formerly known as November is each year responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men's faces in Canada and around the world - even in Yorkton. With their "Mo's" these men, and the women who support them, are raising needed funds and awareness for men's health, specifically prostate cancer. Prostate Cancer Canada along with The Movember Foundation are the men's health partners of Movember in Canada.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer to afflict Canadian men. In fact, rates of prostate cancer in men are comparable to rates of breast cancer in women, yet, until recently, little had been done to bring awareness to the disease.
Seeing almost 119,000 Canadian men and women embrace Movember in 2010 shows big steps have been taken towards changing attitudes and habits relating to men's health around the world. There is still much to be done to catch up with the women's health, but with the moustache Movember aims to fulfill its vision of having an everlasting impact on the face of men's health.
Since its humble beginnings in Melbourne Australia, Movember has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring In fact, in 2010 alone, Canadians gathered to raise a whopping $22.3 million CAD.
