The Yorkton Alexander's Junior Cardinals opened their Optimist Junior League baseball season with a double header against the visiting Southey Eagles at Jubilee Park Saturday.
The Junior Cardinals opened the first game at 1 p.m. with a four run first inning, adding one run in each of the second and fourth innings for a convincing 6-2 win.
Andrew Minchuk started on the mound for the Junior Cardinals. Minchuk pitched for two innings allowing one hit and throwing five strikeouts.
Logan Calanchie came in for four innings, giving up a single hit and throwing six strikeouts.
Jayden Shwaga came in to close in the seventh, allowing two earned runs on a pair of hits.
Calanchie and Justin Stupak led the scoring with two runs apiece.
Ross Stillborn scored a run and drove in a pair of runs.
Shwaga crossed home plate to add a run while Scott Sharpe and Kent Larsen each earned an RBI in the Cardinal win.
The Junior Cardinals went on a scoring spree and played some solid defensive baseball in the second game of the double header to come away with 12-1 win. Yorkton brought home four runners in each of the second and sixth innings, adding a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings on the way to the win.
Larsen started for the Junior Cards, working three innings, allowing only one hit.
Stillborn, in relief, held Eagles batters to one hit as well.
Stupak called upon to close the last three innings, gave up a pair of hits for one earned run, the Eagles lone run in the game.
Junior Cardinals batters were at the top of their form, knocking out five singles, a pair of doubles and a triple for eight hits and scored 12 runs.
Dalane Lamb, Luke Boechler, Calanchie and Shwaga each scored two runs while Mark Jacobs, Stillborn, Sharpe and Larsen each added a run.
Stillborn and Jacobs each nailed a double while Lamb knocked out a triple.
The Junior Cardinals were to host the Raymore Rockets in a double header Sunday afternoon, but the game was cancelled
