Jr. Saints battle Warriors to open their season

The Junior Saints football team opened the season with an exhibition game at home to the Esterhazy Warriors recently. The Junior Saints controlled play from the opening whistle, scoring a touchdown with 7:25 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Junior Saints football team opened the season with an exhibition game at home to the Esterhazy Warriors recently.

The Junior Saints controlled play from the opening whistle, scoring a touchdown with 7:25 remaining in the opening quarter. A two point convert made it 8-0 for the Saints.

On their next set of downs, the Junior Saints scored again to go ahead 14-0.

An interception of an Esterhazy pass was carried into the Warriors end zone to add six points to the Junior Saints score. A two point convert made it 22-0 for the Saints with a minute and 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

On the first possession in the second quarter the Junior Saints took to the air to add another six points to their score. A two point convert made it 30-0 for the Yorkton.

Number 63 for the Warriors, Colby Ens, broke free on a kickoff return to to put the Esterhazy Warriors on the board, making the score 30-6.

A two point convert after a six point major on a great running play made it 38-6 for the Junior Saints.

The Esterhazy Warriors came to life in the second half, scoring a six pointer in the third quarter to make the score 38-12 for Yorkton.

The Junior Saints extended their lead in the fourth quarter with a touchdown to make it 44-12 for Yorkton.

Following Yorkton's touchdown, Ens ran the kickoff back 70 yards for another Esterhazy touchdown to make the score 44-18 for the Saints.

Midway through the fourth quarter the Junior Saints scored their last touchdown and added a two point convert to go ahead 52-18.

Ens scored on another kickoff return to pull the Warriors to a 52-24 score.

Junior Saints head coach Darcy Todos says the win was a very good way to start the season. Both teams gave all their players an opportunity to play.

While he's happy with the Junior Saints defense, Todos admits his specialty teams might need to tighten up a bit as the season progresses.

He was impressed with the game of Esterhazy's Colby Ens.

Todos was happy with his three quarterbacks in the game. "Good for them. They got some good timing under their belts in their first game," he says.

Scoring leaders for the Junior Saints included Brendan Campbell with two touchdowns, Cameron Peepeetch with two majors, Aaron Burback with a pair of six pointers and one from Jake Holinaty.
