FORMER TORONTO BLUE JAYS PITCHER Duane Ward (l) congratulates Wade Karcha (r) on his award.

Local baseball personality Wade Karcha has been associated with the sport in Yorkton for some 20 years. He started when his own youngsters became involved with t-ball and then followed as they moved up to play minor baseball. He says he really became involved when Yorkton Minor Baseball (YMB) broke away from Yorkton Minor Sports to form YMB.

Over the years Karcha has worn many hats, including volunteer, coach, team manager, treasurer (including founding treasurer) and YMB coordinator for registrations. More recently Karcha was team manager for the midget Cardinals and coach of the Yorkton Yankees.

Karcha was informed that he was one of the candidates for the Baseball Canada/Major League Baseball Volunteer of the Year Award and invited to appear at the ceremony in Winnipeg as there was a strong possibility he might be the recipient of the award.

Karcha, humble about the award and his contributions, insists there are a number of people equally deserving of the award. Two who come to mind are Brian Trollope and Bryce Jacobs, he notes. There are also many other managers and coaches who have all contributed to local baseball in a significant way. "I think I'm only a small piece of a huge puzzle," he states.

Karcha's nomination for the award was submitted by Trollope and Saskatchewan Baseball.

While he's proud to accept the award, Karcha suggests it's a humbling experience when one considers the many deserving people across all of Canada who were nominated for the award.

Karcha points out an error in The News Review photo caption of the story which appeared in The News Review Thursday, November 17. It seems the person presenting Karcha with his award was not Duane Ward. It was Baseball Canada president Ray Carter.
