The Sacred Heart High School Girls soccer team won the 2A girls Regional championship in Saskatoon Oct. 18 and 19. The Regional tournament consisted of 6 teams, 2 of which advanced to the Provincial Champion-ship which will be held in Yorkton at Sacred Heart this weekend Friday and Saturday Oct 25 and 26. With a chance to host provincials after falling just short in 2012 losing to three time defending champion Bishop Mahoney of Saskatoon the Saints made no mistake, earning early revenge over their provincial rivals in the process.
The Saints won the Regional championship on the basis of their semi-final win over Se Se Wa Hum 9 to 2 and the Final 2 - 0 over last year's 2A provincial champion Bishop Mahoney. Goal scorers for the Saints in the Semi-final were Rita Fetsch with 7, Bryce Sherring and Kendra Varjassy with singles to move them on to the final where they would do battle with Mahoney in a 2A Provincial Final rematch from last season.
In the Final, the Saints played well as a team with the chance to build serious momentum heading into the provincial tournament this weekend. After a tightly contested first half ended nil-nil the Saints found the breakthrough when Kristen Jonassen found the net on a free kick to put the Saints ahead by one in the second half. With 10 minutes remaining in the game, Kendra Varjassy added the insurance marker to put the Saints through to victory. Amy Prybylski recorded the shut out to earn the clean sheet.
Two teams from Region B which was held in Regina also advanced to the Provincial final. The Notre Dame Hounds and Moose Jaw Central will join Sacred Heart and Saskatoon Bishop Mahoney this weekend in Yorkton as four of the best 2A soccer programs head to Sacred Heart High School's pitch Saturday.
Provincial Game times this weekend are Friday Oct 25 at 12 pm with Sacred Heart playing Notre Dame in the first game of the tournament and 2 pm has Saskatoon Bishop Mahoney playing Moose Jaw Central. Saturday at 12 pm will be the Bronze medal game and at 2 pm the Gold medal Championship game will be played.
