The Yorkton Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is in need of major renovations and Peter Wyatt, Branch President, says the ball is rolling to get the $600,000 needed to get the job done.
The existing building was constructed in 1961 and while it's served members and the area well for many years, the time has come to do some needed maintenance.
During the past year a structural assessment was undertaken on the facility says Wyatt and it was determined, roof beams are deteriorating, windows need replacing, the boiler and mechanical systems are ailing, the electrical system needs upgrading and the kitchen needs renovation.
That said, it was also decided the foundation and wall structures are sound. The location is perfect and renovations are all that are needed to ensure the facility will last long into the future.
"We would like to see this building in operational condition for at least another 16 years," says Wyatt. "In 1986, when the Legion celebrated its 60th anniversary, the members buried a time capsule which is to be opened in 2026." That's also the year the legion will celebrate its 100th anniversary, an important milestone for both members and the community.
If enough funds are raised, Wyatt says legion members would also like to construct a glass addition to create a storage/display for the portable cenotaph unit.
"In 2004 the Yorkton Kinsmen Club generously paid for the construction of the portable cenotaph that we use for our indoor Remembrance Day service," says Wyatt. At present, there is no proper storage place for it when it is not in use. "If we are able to raise enough funds we could build a glass addition to the front of the legion building where it could have a permanent home when not in use."
With a fundraising committee in place, Wyatt says initiatives are well underway to reach the goal.
Among the plans is an upcoming auction event slated for June 5. Ukrainetz Auction is donating time and service and Wyatt is asking members of the city's business community to donate goods to sell. Any business or individual who is interested in helping out should call the legion at 783-9789.
"All items will be documented and the donors will be identified during the sale," adds Wyatt. "Also, a file will be created and recorded with all donors that have contributed to this worthwhile project."
Items can be picked up or dropped off at the legion. The office is open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
