To the Editor: We've all heard the story of the schoolyard bully who challenges the wimpy kid to a fight and the wimpy kid says "Yeah bring it on." The bully being more bombast and bluster than courage and righteousness, then quickly finds an excuse to avoid the fight. Perhaps he remembers a forgotten assignment and needs to get to his homework right away, hears his mother calling or remembers a soon to be missed dental appointment. No excuse at that point is going to possibly work very well for him. There's been books and movies made around this simple inspiring premise. We take it in and cheer unquestionably for the wimpy kid.
So then, why is it that when a prime mister of a country, much better known as a bully than a consensus builder, does this? It's Page 5 news more quickly than two nickels are spent in a dime store. Looking for a major faux pas in early election campaigning look no further than Stephen Harper's one on one debate challenge to Michael Ignatieff. I have given our Prime Minister credit for being politically savvy and having impeccable timing but now I wonder if he can even be credited for that.
