It was a hockey-filled two nights for Yorkton's Don and Shirley Foster. The couple won Boston Pizza's Crown Royal Trip of a Lifetime contest, a two day trip to Toronto.
Don Foster, who says the couple had only been to Toronto's airport before, recalls that the trip began on a high note. When checking in to the Fairmont Hotel, Foster mentioned this was the first time they were in the city, and received some free drinks from the hotel staff.
The first day's events involved visiting the Hockey Hall of Fame and the CN Tower. Foster says the Hall of Fame was a dream for any hockey fan, giving him a chance to look up many hockey heroes and most importantly get up close to the Stanley Cup.
The second day was the day of a game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadians, and an opportunity to explore the city.
"It was a childhood dream a guy has, coming from Saskatchewan. Even to see Toronto or Montreal play, but to see them both play it's great, something I'd probably never do but it was fun," Foster says.
The couple didn't enter because they were interested in the trip, Foster recalls, but because there was a chance to get some hockey sweaters if the name was drawn. The reason they wanted these was more selfless, as he says his son's wife has MS and they were hoping to get them signed and auction them off for a fundraiser. They got the sweaters, and had the connections to get them signed. Winning the trip itself was an unexpected bonus for the pair and they were thrilled to get the opportunity to take the trip.
"It was amazing to win," Foster says.
