The two local high schools, Sacred Heart High School (SHHS) and the Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS) co-hosted the annual York City Invitational Junior Badminton Tour-nament. The event featured 80 students in Grades 7 to 9 from eight schools in the ECD, including SHHS, YRHS, Norquay, Sturgis, Melville Comp, Melville St. Henry's, Canora and Esterhazy. SHHS and YRHS each have two teams entered in each category while each of the other schools have one team, notes Zian Nowosad, YRHS co-coordinator of the tournament.
YRHS hosted the boys' doubles. girls' singles and one pool of mixed doubles competitions while SHHS hosted the girls' doubles, boys' singles and one pool of mixed doubles games.
The tournament is the culmination of the season, says Nowosad. The Yorkton City championships between YRHS and SHHS will take place Monday, April 18 at SHHS to determine Yorkton's competitors at the ECD championship which will be hosted by YRHS Tuesday, May 3.
SHHS co-coordinator Brian Chisholm says the tournament promotes badminton in the ECD. The SHHS team played in three tournaments leading up to the Yorkton City championship.
Tournament results were: Girls Singles: Gold Medal - Morgan Shymanski (SHHS), Silver Medal - Kelly Bazuik - (Sturgis Comp. School). Girls Doubles: Gold Medal - Sarah Riske and Jasmine Kerr (Esterhazy High School), Silver Medal - Kristen Jonasson and Riana Skikewich (SHHS). Boys Singles: Gold Medal - Damon Genaille (Norquay School), Silver Medal - Cody Meronick (Sturgis Comp. School).Boys Doubles: Gold Medal - Ethan Paramor and Logan Stauch (Esterhazy High School), Silver Medal - Graham Campbell and Eddie Schramm (YRHS). Mixed Doubles: Gold Medal - Tannis Bork and Elisha Rayner (Norquay High School), Silver Medal - Rececca Stout and Cody Teron (Sturgis Comp. School).
