The changing season brings baseball, spring football, track and, of course motorsports. Among the first to be up and running, local motocrossers are ready for the year. The Yorkton Motorcycle Club (YMC) started the year with its annual general meeting at Schrader Motors.
The meeting reviewed the past year as well as made some plans for the coming motocross season, which included the election of the executive for 2011, says YMC president Rick Bradshaw.
The club, which was to be all encompassing initially, evolved into a motocross club essentially, Bradshaw notes.
In reviewing last season, Bradshaw says the club did reasonably well financially with the race meet and hosting the banquet for the region in September for the second time. Yorkton has become the fall back site for the Saskatchewan motocross region with the Gallagher Centre offering an excellent facility for the 300 plus people who generally attend the event each year, he reports.
The overview for the past season indicates a good year with the club being financially stable. "Events aren't making very much money anymore but we scrimped and saved," Bradshaw states.
Other topics of discussion talked about volunteers, trying to prepare the local track, changing things so maybe club members can ride on a track that's a little better prepped. "Typically it's left unmanicured. It's fixed and touched up a little bit but that's it," he admits.
With the new water system hooked up it should be possible to water the track once a week or a couple of times a month so to help keep the dust down, Bradshaw adds.
Quite a few club members race so it's a good idea to have a good track to train and prepare on. As well the club needs to keep the track safe for the entry level members to practise on, Bradshaw suggests.
Looking ahead to the current season, The Yorkton motocross race will be held at the Millstone Raceway July 24. The mid-summer race date was selected by the circuit because Yorkton is one of the few tracks in the province that has a water system which permits watering the track more intensely than most clubs can. "Most clubs are pulling out of a dugout and using temporary water trucks," Bradshaw says.
The Yorkton race meet will rake place right in the middle of the provincial championship series. "It's actually a good time to hold it other than the heat. It can be quite entertaining for race fans," Bradshaw suggests.
The Saskatchewan provincial circuit started in Moose Jaw this past weekend, he reports.
The new YMC executive includes past president Greg Litvanyi who is currently the provincial president of the Saskatchewan Motocross Association.
Bradshaw, who was the founding president, was returned as president.
Michelle Litvanyi was elected as treasurer.
Ken Lutz is vice-president and will also represent Yorkton at the regional level for any region meetings that have to happen at race meets.
Jo-Ann Pearce, a new member to the executive this year, was elected secretary.
