His project won out over many of his peers and as such he gets to move on to compete on a grander scale.
Grade 12 Yorkton Regional High Student Gage Bush recently travelled to Moose Jaw to compete in the annual Provincial Skills Competition and when all was said and done he walked away with a gold medal.
While in Moose Jaw students had the opportunity to compete in various trade and technology areas against other students from the region.
The event allows students the opportunity to see post-secondary options and also gives them a chance to learn more within their chosen areas.
Bush competed in the 3-D Animation category.
"The theme for the project was 'Out of Time'," details Bush, adding students across Saskatchewan are given a specific theme upon arrival to the event and then allotted an amount of time to complete their projects on the spot. With just six hours permitted, Bush completed his project in five and a half hours.
"The general idea is to first create concept sketches... and then create a multi-page storyboard... once that's been accomplished you then model your characters on to the computer and you animate them...," says Gage.
In the end, students produce their own movie.
This year marked the fifth year for Bush to compete at the Skills Canada level. He's also moved on to the Nationals twice, finishing third in 2007 and seventh in 2009.
He works hard at his craft and he says it's his intention to turn his hobby into a full time career.
"I am definitely continuing. I haven't spent five years of my life doing this for nothing," he says adding, his plan is to enroll in the 'Think Tank Training Centre' in Vancouver to further his animation skills upon graduation.
Because of his recent provincial win, Bush will move on to compete at the National Skills competition which is slated for June 1-4 in Quebec City.
