There will soon be some big changes in retail sales in Yorkton. Weber's Building Centre and Weber's Furniture and Appliance Centre have been purchased by McMunn and Yates Building Supplies Ltd. The effective date of the transaction is September 19, 2011.
President Brent Weber says it was a good opportunity for himself and his brother Brian to get out of the retail segment.
"It was a good opportunity. McMunn and Yates is a huge company that is going to be taking us over, and that's good for our employees and good for our customers," he says.
Change will be gradual, Weber says. He notes that there will be improvements in computerization along with new products being introduced, as well as changes to the storefront to reflect the new owners. He says though, that the business will stay largely the same.
"A lot of it will be the same, all of our employees are going to stay... We're happy for them, because we have very good employees," Weber notes.
The new owners are a good fit for the operation, he says, and he suggests that the move will be a positive one for employees and consumers.
"They have the same ideals and the same platform as we do. They're a very good operation, they're very customer friendly, and they'll do a good job," Weber suggests.
The Webers' focus will return to the construction operation, which was where the family's business began in 1951.
"We were in construction before we were in retail, so we're going back to where we grew up," Weber says.
McMunn and Yates Building Supplies Ltd. was founded in Dauphin, MB. in 1971. With the addition of new locations in Yorkton and Kamsack, they now operate sixteen retail lockations, a distribution centre in Headingly, MB and a truss manufacturing plant in Dauphin, MB.
