It's hard to believe that with the several inches of rain that Moncton received Saturday and the pits still under water Sunday that the track would end up being dangerously dusty before the end of the race day. "The track was in mint condition through qualifiers," said Randy Maffenbeier. "Unfortunately sprinklers can't lay down enough water between motos unless you're Gopher Dunes. As a race promoter myself I know too well the challenges faced every race day. We can only hope that in the next race season that these issues are addressed as we wish to compete safely and not lose riders due to track preparedness."
Shawn Maffenbeier of the Yamalube Schrader's SMX Racing Team pulled out of the gate out with a 11th place start in the first moto. He quickly moved into sixth position maintaining that for the rest of the moto. With a start similar to the first moto, Shawn and his Yamaha 450 quickly pulled ahead into sixth position. "I was very close to getting a pass into fifth," said Maffenbeier. "There was a burm I'd used in the previous lap before the finish line jump that I thought still looked good. I made the decision to use it and at the last second saw a huge hole. I tried to miss it and ended up in the banners." Losing two positions, Shawn managed to get back on track but by the next lap a flat front tire was the result of the tangle. "It's disappointing for sure when an issue arises," said owner/manager Jackie Maffenbeier. " Shawn persevered and the Dunlop Tires and SSS suspension by Joe Skidd gave him the confidence through the rest of the moto to hold on for a 13th place finish."
Overall a good day for the Yamalube Schrader's SMX Racing Team finishing ninth and moving up to seventh in the Monster Energy Canadian Pro Nationals! "Shawn's confidence and skill has improved by leaps and bounds this season," said owner/manager Randy Maffenbeier. "We look forward to next weekend at Sand De Lee."
