Alex Hornung and Abbie Ziola will be carrying the hopes of Melville Composite School when they tee up for the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association golf championship.
The pair qualified for the provincial tournament after earning berths at the District championship at Yorkton's Deer Park Golf Course last Monday. They now travel to Humboldt for the provincial championship Friday and Saturday. Thursday is set aside for practice rounds.
Hornung fired an 86 to finish third in the boys category while Ziola carded a 134 to also claim a third-place finish in the event featuring competitors from Sacred Heart and the Regional of Yorkton, Canora, Preeceville, Sturgis and Esterhazy.
Sacred Heart won both the boys and girls teams events with Melville's team failing to qualify for Humboldt.
MCS coach Rick Haacke is expecting solid performances from both Hornung and Ziola.
"He can improve," Haacke says of the Grade 12 student.
"He can work on his putting a little because he had a great day ball striking but I think he could shave five or six strokes off his putting with just a little more concentration and reading the greens better."
While Ziola was disappointed with her performance, Haacke says she'll turn in a better score in Humboldt.
"She hits a good ball and her concentration is really good. I'm kind of excited because Abbie's only in Grade 10 and she's got two more years (of high school play). She's only going to get better."
