The dollars and cents of any project can add up. And the City of Melville is finding that out when it comes to the Horizon Credit Union Centre - also known as the Communiplex project - to the tune of $1.47 million in overages on the project originally budgeted to come in at $24.56 million.
A budget summary from Graham Construction as of the end of September has costs for the facility totaling just over $26 million, with change orders being the driver of continual costs being added onto the project.
The $1.47 million in overages marks a significant increase since council last received and released a project budget in July where the overages sat at about $910,000. Additional costs can be attributed to change orders for the project, according to the budget summary, as consultant fees to date are on par with the budgeted $1.78 million mark while base building costs - which include site work, concrete, masonry, mechanical and other budgeted construction work - are actually sitting under its budgeted amount by almost $900,000.
Meanwhile, the project calling for just over $90,000 to be budgeted for change orders is seeing that number dwarfed at the moment with $1.45 million in change orders already being processed and almost another $1 million in unprocessed change orders still being considered, reviewed or completed.
The construction process at the Centre is still ongoing as well, leaving the possibility for the overage amount to continue growing.
