Deer Park Golf Course played host to its Annual Men's Open tournament this past weekend.

As organizer Ross Fisher indicates, the weather certainly was on their side for the weekend.

"We couldn't have had better weather. It was very hot but that's good weather," he says.

The open featured 74 golfers competing in the men's section with another 17 golfers playing in a mixed scramble style.

Yorkton's Todd Thorsness was the winner of the tournament after shooting a 73 on Saturday and 77 on Sunday for a two-day total of 150.

A particular highlight of the weekend was the $10,000 prize won by Barry Boehm for his hole-in-one on the par three, third hole. The $10,000 prize will be presented to Boehm courtesy of Yorkton Co-op.

Due to the uphill layout of the par three, Boehm says that he was able to see his approach shot fall right into the hole.

"It was way at the top. We saw the ball disappear (into the hole). It was really something," he recalls.

The hole-in-one is a first for Boehm, an avid golfer in his own right. He recalls coming close to an 'ace' a couple of years ago but says actually achieving the real thing is amazing.

"It took about four or five holes to really believe what happened."

Golf fans will recall Tiger Wood's memorable chip for birdie at the U.S Open in 2008.

Boehm says the golfers at the top of the hill, who had a better view of his ball, told him that the ball rested on the lip of the cup before falling in, much the same way that Woods' shot had.

Including the excitement of Boehm's achievement, Fisher points out that the tournament was an overall success for everyone involved.

"We had good participation. We had a $10,000 prize winner for the hole-in-one on Saturday. I think everybody had a very good time. We had great support from the business community, we had (a) really good prize board for the golfers," he mentions.

The support from the business community included 36 hole sponsors and nine major sponsors.

Money was also raised for the Deer Park Golf Course, Fisher adds.

As was mentioned, two flights of mixed golfers were included in the weekend's festivities.

Fisher says this was a way of determining whether or not there would be interest in a mixed or couple's tournament next year.

"We did it with the idea that we're looking at organizing a mixed tournament next year and we wanted to see if there was some interest in doing that," Fisher details, "We didn't have a really large turnout for the mixed. So we're going to have to investigate it a bit more before we decide whether or not we would go ahead and organize one of those."

The Flight Winners for the event were; Championship - Todd Thorsness. First Flight - Vern Weibel. Second Flight - Darren Grindle. Third Flight - Matt Healy. Fourth Flight - Ries Mansuy. Fifth Flight - Neal Matechuk. Sixth Flight - Darcy Boychuk. Seventh Flight - Rick Leland.
