The Yorkton Curling Club (YCC) hosted the Cornerstone Credit Union cash bonspiel over the weekend.
YCC manager Neil Weinmaster says the weekend spiel, which started Friday and ran until Sunday evening, is one of the stops on the Sask. Women's Curling Tour. Teams on the tour earn points which go towards a berth on the provincial playdowns. "They also earn cash, so it's a nice spiel and an important spiel for some of the ladies," Weinmaster notes.
The bonspiel attracted a full slate of 16 teams with eight teams entered on a waiting list, Weinmaster reports. "We had a good turnout and lots that wanted to come but couldn't get in so that's nice to see for our spiel," he says.
He thanks bonspiel title sponsor the Cornerstone Credit Union for its support for the annual event.
Weinmaster says the competition was excellent with a lot of close games by good, young teams which is nice to see for the sport.
The bonspiel final saw Regina's Michelle Englot square off against Larissa Murray, also from Regina. Englot qualified out of the A-side while Murray came out of the C qualifier spot.
The Englot rink of skip Michelle Englot, third Lana Vey, second Roberta Materi, and lead Sarah Slykwa emerged as bonspiel winners.
The win is Englot's second tour win, the other was in Swift Current two weeks ago.
Englot reports the team played consistently well all weekend which allowed them to qualify out of the A side and earn a bye and a rest before going on to the semi-final. "We were fortunate, they (Murray rink) were on their third game and we were just on our second so that was nice," she says.
Her team consistently managed to position their rocks right and had great draw weight, she reports. "We were just putting the rocks where we needed to put them and missing the right way when we were on the wrong side," Englot says.
"We like to play aggressively. Today we paled a little more defensively than we typically play, Englot states. She suggest the opposing team was dictating that a little by coming into the house when things were tied up. "Typically other teams put more rocks in play but they know that our style is aggressive, so they stayed towards the defensive side," she adds.
"It was a very well played game, actually, Englot closes.
Cornerstone Credit Union representative Cliff Trembley, on hand for the presentation to the winning rink says it was just another super weekend of curling for the Yorkton region.
