Accept it or not, we ARE a province and a country that is comprised of a multicultural society. That's why the Government of Saskatchewan, along with the rest of Canada is encouraging all residents to celebrate diversity this week which has been designated Multicultural Week in Saskatchewan, November 21 to 28.
"Saskatchewan has a growing and increasingly multicultural population," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Bill Hutchinson reminds residents. "Each culture contributes to our province's strength, growth and our cherished quality of life.
"Celebrating diversity and respecting different world views is a key principle of our new cultural policy, Pride of Saskatchewan," Hutchinson adds. "It is an example of how Saskatchewan is on a new road and how together we will realize our full potential."
Not always known as the trendsetter, Saskatchewan was the first province to enact multiculturalism legislation in 1974. By doing so, Saskatchewan recognizes the right of every community to retain its identity, language and traditional arts and sciences. The province's commitment to multiculturalism, says Hutchinson, is reflected in its motto, Multis e gentibus vires - From Many Peoples Strength.
"We all benefit by connecting across our various cultures whether it is through diversifying a work force, exchanging leadership ideas with immigrants as they adjust to life in Canada, sharing our culture through language schools, attending a pow wow, giving business to a local ethnic restaurant, or simply by making a new friend. Discover... share... cultivate respect," points out Rhonda Rosenberg, Executive Director of the Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan.
The Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan has created an information sheet called Ways to Welcome Saskatchewan Multicultural Week. It was sent to all schools in the province. Copies are also available through the council office.
It's through initiatives such as this that acceptance can be nurtured. Like the old saying goes... "United we stand, divided we fall."
