If you're the parent of a child with disabilities, there is a helpful new tool available you may want to check out.
The Saskatchewan Association for Community Living (SACL) has updated its popular Navigating the System handbook, and is offering it at no cost to parents of children with disabilities.
The SACL is a provincial non-profit organization that offers support to individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families. Although Navigating the System was written for parents of children with intellectual disabilities, the handbook is useful for parents with children who have other disabilities.
"Parents who have a child with a disability must often deal with multiple systems in order to access the services and supports their child needs. These systems can be confusing and overwhelming for families," says Judy Hannah, the SACL's Grassroots Alliance Project Coordinator.
"Navigating the System is designed to help parents understand how to work with these systems and to become more familiar with the government and community-based support options that are available to individuals and families."
Navigating the System was first published in 2004. It was updated in 2005 and again in 2010. The book discusses a variety of topics, including advocacy, respite care, education, the medical system, assisted living devices, justice issues, financial assistance, planning for adulthood and inclusive recreation and sport.
"This is the type of book that can change your life and that of your family. It can empower you to make better decisions and help alleviate at least some of the stress you may be experiencing," adds Bluesette Campbell, a parent and advocate.
Navigating the System is available for free to parents of children with disabilities by calling the SACL's Saskatoon office at (306) 955-3344 or by e-mailing [email protected]. Professionals can purchase the book for $20, plus $8.50 for postage.
