With the start of October came new provincial tobacco laws.
The Ministry of Health is reminding Saskatchewan citizens that important tobacco control regulations are now in effect. One of the provisions of the new provincial legislation is banning smoking in vehicles when a child under the age of 16 is present.
"Children are especially vulnerable to concentrated levels of tobacco smoke in vehicles, and this legislation helps protect them," Health Minister Don McMorris comments.
Prohibiting smoking in enclosed common areas of multi-unit dwellings and prohibiting smoking within three metres of doorways, windows and air intakes of public buildings such as shopping centres, restaurants, bars, recreational facilities and office buildings will also come into force on October 1.
"Public expectation for smoke-free spaces has been increasing and we are taking steps to protect our people from exposure to environmental tobacco smoke," McMorris adds.
"The new tobacco control changes will support a healthier Saskatchewan for everyone."
Other provisions that will also come into effect at this time are prohibiting the sale of little cigars in packages of less than 20, a ban on all outdoor signs that advertise tobacco products, and increased restrictions on the use of indoor signs promoting tobacco.
