The Yorkton Curling Club (YCC) hosted the annual Ladies bonspiel over the weekend.

YCC manager Neil Weinmaster reports 24 ladies teams from Yorkton and area, as well as one team from Flin Flon, competed in four events.

Sask. Senior Women's champions the Dolores Syrota rink, who will travel to Digby, Nova Scotia for the national competition, were entered in the bonspiel. "It's nice to have them here," Weinmaster comments.

The bonspiel wraps up the Yorkton Ladies' curling season, with the exception of the annual YCC wind-up bonspiel, says Weinmaster.

The event had lots of excellent support from local sponsors again this year. "We wouldn't run our spiel without them," Weinmaster states. Park's Jewellery sponsored the A-event. B-event sponsors weer the Cornerstone Credit Union and Yorkton Co-op. Brenda Pries and Maple Farm Equipment sponsored the C-event. Yorkton Dentists, Dr. Bowtell, Dr. Cottenie, Dtr. Dergousoff, Dr. Junek, Dr. Puchala and Dr. Trischuk sponsored the D-event.

Bonspiel champs, the A-event winners the Nielsen foursome defeated the provincial senior ladies' champion team Syrota rink in a close final game which went down to the last end. The Nielsen team includes skip Myrna Nielsen, third Lynne Doll, second Becky Dutchak, and lead Karen Hierlihy.

The win was totally unexpected, Nielsen admits. "I just came out here hoping to give them a good game and I think we ended up doing that," she comments.

Nielsen had some very close game. Her strategy was simply to make the shots that were called. "We were just trying to get some rocks in play," she states.

"The whole weekend we were just out there to have fun," Nielsen closes.

The Julie Norman rink of skip Julie Norman, third Frances Simonson (nee Thauberger), second Julie Wilson and lead Marcia Sedor claimed the B-event title.

C-event winner was the Mavis Lutz rink of skip Mavis Lutz, third Mary Holfeld, second Kathy Ritchie, and lead Iris Romanuk.

D-event winners were the Karen Thies foursome of skip Karen Thies, third Myrna Grunert, second Linda Ortynsky and lead Sharon Pfeifer.
