The Parkland Padres, a local senior men's plus 40 team recently captured the Saskatchewan Baseball Association (SBA) Masters Men's Provincial twilight division baseball championship at Davidson, Sask.
Padres coach Ewen Morrison says the Padres clinched the provincial title in three games, coming from behind in every game.
The Padres downed Filmore in the first game before moving on to compete against four time defending champions, Riverhurst Thumpers. The win came from a walk off hit in the Padres last bat when Bobby Haas hit a walk-off single, Morrison reports.
The winning pitcher in the first game was Lynton Evans while Dale Sidoryk earned the win against Riverhurst, Morrison says.
In the final, championship game, the Padres were trailing the home team, Davidson, 7-0 after the first inning. "They had a very strong team, a whole lot younger than us," Morrison claims. The Padres clawed their way back to a 10-8 win. Chris Wyatt belted out the clinching two run homer in the fifth inning of the final game, Morrison reports.
The winning pitcher in the final game was Evans again. The pitching staff of Garnet Bjornerud, Dale Sidoryk, Chris Wyatt and Lynton Evans who closed out all three games. Evans was also named tournament MVP, Morrison reports.
"Hats off to the hosting committee, the town of Davidson and the tournament coordinator, Jason Shaw who did a fantastic job," Morrison says.
Morrison thanks the South East Senior Base-ball League (SESBL) for allowing the Padres to play a half schedule in the SESBL over the last two years. "These games were invaluable to the Padres in getting a real game field and batting experience," he states.
"Those young guys who play against us really get us on our game," Morrison adds. He also thanks league president Brain Trollope for his support of the Padres.
Everyone hit well all weekend. "We got more than 10 runs every game," team manager Evans notes.
The Padres will be back to defend their title next year, Evans promises.
The championship victory was extra special as revenge against River-hurst who beat the Padres in the final last year, Evans suggests. "It was kind of nice to beat them."
