The Kam Busters Car Club eighth annual Prairie Thunder Drag Races were held Sunday at the Yorkton Airport on what may well have been the hottest day of the summer.
Kam Busters member and former club president, Wade Stachura the event featured lots of great competition to entertain motor sport and drag racing fans. Approximately 100 vehicles were registered for the one eighth mile race meet, Stachura reports.
The meet featured six main classes, Stachura notes. The Trophy Class includes regular street driven cars, typically the slowest class. Pro-street, the4 next class on the ladder, includes vehicles that are still street legal but have more horsepower and travel much faster than the Trophy Class cars. The Mod ET Class cars are pretty much all-out race cars, stripped down versions with very high horsepower. The Top Comp Class are the very high end drag cars which are the fastest on the track. The junior class for youngsters 12-17 years, featured small single cylinder versions of drag racers. The final class included the motorcycles sleds and one racing quad.
While overall numbers in both spectators and competitors were down a little from last year, the Kam Busters were happy with the turnout, Stachura says. He suspects the high temperature may have been a factor. "Sometimes people back off a little bit from going outside when it's 35,000 above," he quips.
The Kam Busters have a good working relationship with the airport authority. In return for paving the runway, the club has a 10 year contract with the City of Yorkton to use the strip for racing, Stachura reports.
It was discovered at the Kam Busters Prairie Thunder Drags that hockey coaches don't melt away during the summer off season. Apart from scouting and making plans for the upcoming season, some of them actually try to enjoy the summer by becoming involved in other activities like, say, drag racing.
It was discovered that SJHL Melville Millionaires head coach Jamie Fiesel fills his idle summer hours building and racing dragsters both for himself and for his kids. His daughter Brooklyn was last year's junior champion, for example.
This year Fiesel campaigns a 1932 Bantam Altered powered by a 588 cubic inch big block Chevy motor which goes from 0-160 miles per hour in about eight seconds.
Fiesel claimed the Top Comp Class title at the eighth mile races Sunday at the Yorkton Airport.
Results of the Prairie Thunder Drags were: Trophy Class - winner, Jeremy Mosiondz; runner up, Wes Griffiths. Pro Street Class - winner, Clint Dun; runner up, Mike Andnsko. Mod ET Class - winner, Kim Prince; runner up Kerry Prince. Top Comp Class - winner, Jamie Fiesel; runner up, Ray Hollam. Junior Class - winner, Ashley Wilson, runner up, Reid Holland.
Stachura thanks all the volunteers who made the event another success. He also expressed the club's appreciation for the support of all the many sponsors of the races.
