Prairie Women on Snowmobiles

It all started out when two friends, one a breast cancer survivor, asked her friend to snowmobile across Saskatchewan to raise funds for breast cancer research. Together the two planned, organized and implemented Prairie Women on Snowmobiles and today the initiative is still going strong with 10 women taking to the trails annually in support of the cause.

On Thursday the ladies made a Yorkton stop on the last leg of their seven day journey. While each participant rides for their own reasons, the common goal is to one day put an end to breast cancer. Debbie Oborowsky from Meota, Saskatchewan, a first time participant with the ride says she's riding in support of loved ones. "My mom is actually battling cancer right now and my mother in law is a breast cancer survivor and I've lost friends to cancer." It's no easy feat trekking across the province. With temperatures ranging from -43 to plus two Oborowsky says the journey was challenging but an adventure she will not soon forget. "You don't realize the challenge of how far you're actually travelling until you do it... we travel a long way... but the awareness is huge. We travel to a lot of communities, they want to know what we're doing, why we're doing it and they've been so supportive."

To date more than $1.4 million has been raised through this event. To learn more or to get involved, visit: www.prairiewomen.ca.
