The Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS) Raider Gridders hosted the Johnson Wildcats at Kinsmen Century Field Friday. Unfortunately for the Raiders, the Wildcats proved to be a bit more than they could handle as F.W. Johnson shutout the Raiders 18-0.
The Gridders defense held firm and managed to prevent the Wildcats from scoring a touchdown. Johnson's 18 points all came off the magic toe of place kicker Colton Lee. Lee kicked three field goals in the first half, one a 41 yarder to give the Wildcats a 9-0 lead at half time. He added three more in the second half including one from 45 yards out to claim six field goals on six attempts.
Raider back Paul Toth made a spectacular reception, pulling in the ball while being tackled by opposing players.
YRHS head coach Roby says the Raiders are a better team than they showed Friday afternoon. They just didn't play as well as they could, he suggests.
He credits Johnson with a solid performance. "If they'd have punted one through the end zone for one point, they'd have still beat us. You can't win any football games with no points," he admits.
The defense played tough, Sharpe states. That said, Johson had a good team which played well and have 3-1 record so far this season.
Sharpe points out the bright spots in the game. Paul Toth played hard earning over 100 yards in receptions. He also had a dozen tackles to his credit. Layne Hull played equally hard. Michael Nagy played well.
The Raiders play in a tough league with no easy teams to go up against, Sharpe declares. "We have to dig deep and we have to play tough," he closes.
