The Canadian Red Cross in Saskatchewan is now accepting nominations for the prestigious Young Humanitarian of the Year Award and the Humanitarian of the Year Award.

These awards will be presented at the Red Cross Power of Humanity Gala on Thursday, Sept. 12 at the Ramada Hotel in Regina. Nominations are accepted until June 25, 2013.

The gala is held to: inspire individuals to pursue humanitarian goals; recognize the spirit of humanity in Saskatchewan; and generate funds to further the humanitarian work of the Canadian Red Cross in the province.

Nomination forms are available at redcross.ca or by calling 306-721-1601.

"If you know someone who is a pillar of community spirit, someone who goes above and beyond the call of duty to show compassion for others and make their community a better place to live, then please consider nominating that person for a humanitarian award," says Cindy Fuchs, Provincial Director of the Red Cross in Saskatchewan.

The Canadian Red Cross Humanitarian and Young Humanitarian of the Year awards will be presented to two individuals in Saskatchewan who have demonstrated the spirit of humanity in a local, national or international capacity by:

Promoting mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace among all peoples;

Contributing to the alleviation of human suffering, protection of life, or the promotion of health;

Educating the public on the meaning and importance of humanity and human dignity

Promoting respect for human beings.

As the world's largest humanitarian movement, the Red Cross/Red Crescent has close to 100 million volunteers in 187 countries around the world. Canadian Red Cross volunteers have worked as part of this movement for more than 100 years and continue to provide community-base services and assistance while also supporting the larger international movement through disaster appeals and health and development programs.
