The Salvation Army Kettle Campaign is beginning for another year, starting on November 24 to December 24. While the kettles are ready to go, the organization needs volunteers to help make the campaign a success.
Jim Pedwell, Kettle Coordinator, says that they're looking for volunteers who have that Christmas spirit, and are willing to spread the word about the cause and enjoy talking to people.
"We're looking for people who have a smile on their face, who are willing to jingle some bells and make some noise," he says.
The funds are used to support the food bank, and to help pay for the Christmas hampers that are distributed through the season. Pedwell notes that the usage has increased at the food bank, and they expect to distribute a greater number of the hampers this year.
"Once Christmas is over people tend to forget people in need, but they're still using the food bank. That's why we need to do this, to help the community," he adds.
He notes that all money raised during the kettle campaign will stay in Yorkton, helping local families in need.
"It really brings to light the presence of the Salvation Army and the Food Bank... This is a step outside of gift giving, and to making a difference in someone's life.
"Someone you may not know, but someone in the community," Pedwell says.
There will be four locations for the kettles, Superstore, Wal-Mart, Parkland Mall and the Liquor Store. Shifts take two hours, and the stations will be manned from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. This year, Boston Pizza is offering coupons for every volunteer who does three or more shifts. Pedwell encourages all those willing to volunteer to call him at 641-4321.
